ASTM E 84 - the Steiner Tunnel test - subjects a long length of material (wall linings, cables etc) to a gas burner at one end of an enclosed 'tunnel' through which air is drawn. BS476-7标准根据火焰蔓延的长度，将材料划分为四个等级，BS 476-6 Class 1；BS 476-6 Class 2；BS 476-6 Class 3；BS 476-6 Class 4。
ASTM E84标准将材料划分为三个等级ASTM E84－A类；ASTM E84－B类；ASTM E84－C类。
