1.1 Scope.
1.1.1 This standard shall cover the installation, performance, operation, and maintenance of public emergency services communications systems and facilities.
1.1.2 This standard shall not be used as a design specification manual or an instruction manual.

Reliable emergency communications are an integral part of effective emergency responsiveness by the fire service, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and other responders. That's why working with the latest edition of NFPA 1221 Standard for the Installation, Maintenance, and Use of Emergency Service Communications Systems is essential. This critical Standard provides procedural and physical criteria for the installation, performance, operation, and maintenance of public emergency service communications systems and facilities.
Changes to the 2010 NFPA 1221 include
·   Added requirements for protect the communications center against attack using a vehicle laden with explosives
·   A new section to address radio coverage for fireground or tactical radio communications.
·   Requirements for overall performance for emergency alarm processing revised from 95% within 60 seconds to 90%.
·   Editorial changes for improved consistency so that other NFPA? standards can interface with dispatch and response criteria
(Softbound, 44 pp., 2010).
