There are two different test methods which can be utilized to determine the toxic fumes produced from materials to be placed on passenger carrying trains in the UK.

The two different methods are as follows:

BS 6853 Annex B.1: Mass based test method(NF X 70-100)，This method should be appkied to minor use materials(table 7 and table 8),textiles(table 11) and cables (table 13 and table14).

BS 6853 Annex B.2: Area based test method（prEN2824，prEN2825，prEN2825). An area based method should be used used for sufaces(Table 1,Table 2,Table 3,Table 4,Table 5,Table 6) seat tirm and seat shell(Table 9,Table 10) and mattresses(Table 12).

What is toxicity testing?
Measuring the fumes produced from a material exposed to controlled fire conditions gives an indication of the fumes which may be produced in a real fire situation. This enables us to choose materials with lower levels of risk to human life.

BS6853:1999 Standard requirement for Toxicity testing
Interior horizontal supine surfaces (BS6853 Table 1)requirement: R(max)≤5.0
Interior vertical surface for BS6853 (BS6853 Table 2) requirement: R(max)≤1.0
Interior horizontal prone surfaces for BS6853 (BS6853 Table 3) requirement: R(max)≤1.0

Exterior horizontal supine surfaces (BS6853 Table 4)requirement: R(max)≤8.5
Exterior vertical surface for BS6853 (BS6853 Table 5) requirement: R(max)≤1.7
Exterior horizontal prone surfaces for BS6853 (BS6853 Table 6) requirement: R(max)≤1.7
