近年来由电气引起的火灾逐年增多，而其中由于电线电缆原因所引发的火灾占相当大的比较。因此在民用建筑、人员密集场所等有大量电气设备及密集敷设大量电缆的场所采用阻燃电缆阻止火势蔓延，因此在重点工程和建筑物内使用无卤低烟、阻燃产品是相关必要。一般性建筑用电缆的安全使用寿命为30年，而建筑物用电缆作为配套产品不能与建筑的同等寿命。正常情况下每30年更换一次楼体内电缆，而每次更换涉及到千家万户且成本太大，也给居民带来了很大的麻烦和经济负担，所以到目前为止还没有哪个房产商或者物业设身处地为广大住户的人身及财产安全和长远考虑，为广大住户更换过建筑内的电缆、电线及配套设施。高性能建筑用电缆正常使用寿命能达到使用建筑的使用寿命，目前尚无国家标准加发规范。为了规范电缆使用寿命在建筑电气中的应用，编制建筑行业标准《建筑用0.6/1kV无卤低烟阻燃电缆》。
